Picks o te wiki

Our top 4 tech-inspired arts, media, and events

ā€

#1 ā€˜WAKAā€™, a web series about the revival of waka buildingā€ā€

Watching these teams turn full-blown rākau/trees into waka is one of the most amazing displays of ancient meets modern hangarau that this wood-work pleb has ever seen. Alsoā€”itā€™s full of rad tikanga, characters, and tÅ«manako/hope for the anamata/future.

ā€Find it: on E-Tangata I Time: 6Ɨ15min episodes I Cost: free I Credits: produced by Tawera Productions in collaboration with E-Tangata and the New Zealand Herald as part of Tuia 250 & made with support from NZ On Air.

#2 ā€˜Takuahiroaā€™, a digital motion graphic about whakapapa, connection, & ancient knowledge

Tuatahi/Firstly, we just thought the traditional motifs mixed with techy symbols in this video were tau kē/cool as all hell. When we settled in, we loved finding our own kōrero/stories in them (kind of like kapua/cloud watching). And when we finally read the whakamārama/explanation all about reconnection? The top picks deal was sealed.

ā€ā€Find it: on the Best Awards site or in the upcoming Takiwā Hou: Imagining New Spaces at the Malta Biennale exhibition if youā€™re in that neck of the woods I Time: 3mins 30secs I Cost: free online I Credits: Kaaterina Kerekere is the talented artist, hereā€™s her website and instagram page.

#3 ā€˜Waihikoā€™, a childrenā€™s book about a new atua connecting Māori to the digital realm

Youā€™ve got to hear the backstory on this one. In a cyber bullying workshop the Ariki team realised thatā€”even though weā€™ve always known it through natureā€”Māori have a bit of a whakapapa gap when it comes to electricity. They dreamed up this atua to help us to embrace and move forward in the technological world. Ka mua, ka muri, nē?!

Find it: in the Waihiko website shop I Time: 15mins I Cost: $40 or free for schools I Credits: published by Ariki Creative.

#4 ā€˜He kupu whakatepe Ä«mēra (email sign-offs)ā€™ a podcast to help us branch out from ā€˜Ngā mihiā€™

Between usā€¦ more than once Iā€™ve written an Ä«mēra sign-off in te reo Māori, hovered my mouse above the ā€˜tukuaā€™/ā€™sendā€™ button, then fully wussed out and deleted whatever Iā€™d come up with to replace it with a nice safe, ā€˜Ngā mihiā€™. Never again! With signature kindness, the boys at Everyday Māori are here to tautoko/support us on the step up.

Find it: on Spotify or your fav podcast provider I Time: 12mins I Cost: free ICredits: The Everyday Māori podcast is hosted by Hēmi Kelly and Āpera Woodfine. Check out the facey group and instagram page.

ā€A deep-dive on our kaupapa o te wiki

ā€

- Wero o te wiki -

We use different hangarau ia rā/every day to work, play, read epic Ä«mēra/emails about Māori culture šŸ˜‰, and moreā€”but do we know the kupu Māori for them?

Mōrena e te whānau, Grace here. This week I set a little office wero using Hemi Kellyā€™s video, ā€˜Kupu hangarau (Technology words)ā€™ to test Lizzie on the roots and overall meanings of some handy kupu.

Check out her (mixed) results and play along below (scroll slowly to avoid seeing the answer straight away).

ā€

1. Kaweoro

She got the meanings of kawe (carry) and oro (sound), put them together, ANNNDā€¦guessed radio.

A good try, but kāo/nope, 0 points for you e hoa.

Answer: Headphones (kawe/carry, oro/sound)

ā€

2. Pae pāhopori

These were all new kupu for Lizzie so I had to give her the meaning of each. ā€œPae as in platformā€”yes, just like paepae, pāho for media, pori for society.ā€

ā€œAhhhh like ā€˜haporiā€™ā€¦ā€ . She combines the kupu together and excitedly guessesā€¦ ā€˜Platform Media Society!ā€™

Uhā€¦ āhua tika/correctā€¦ sort ofā€¦. More often referred to asā€¦.

Answer: Social media (pae/platform, pāho/media, pori/society)

ā€

3. Rorohiko

She gets this one in a second. Tino kerēwa/very clever.

ā€œElectric brainā€”I know itā€™sā€¦ā€

Answer: Computer (roro/brain, hiko/electric)

ā€

4. Huiata

ā€œCareful meetingā€¦?!ā€ is the first guess.

Nōku te hē, that might have been my pronunciation, ā€˜Ätaā€™ means ā€˜gently, slowly, carefullyā€™. I HELPFULLY say it again for her. And again.

Her final answer is, ā€œYou just looking at me saying the same word over and over is not working.ā€

Ooosh attitude, better move on.

Answer: Video meeting (hui/meeting, ata or ataata/video)

ā€

5. Punua pāho

Sheā€™s confused on this one. ā€œWhy am I thinking source?ā€

My face must have contorted.

ā€œNo, not sauce!ā€

She's thinking of ā€˜punaā€™/a spring. When I tell her the answer, she realises she hears the kupu ā€˜Ä«pāhoā€™ at the start of ia ā€˜Everyday Māoriā€™ podcast episode. Oops.

Answer: Podcast (punua/small, pāho/broadcasting)

ā€

6. Paeāhua

Again my pronunciation may have something to do with the first guess. She answers ā€œGoodā€¦. images.ā€

ā€œWe learned this general use for ā€˜paeā€™ earlier soā€¦ā€ I prompt herā€¦ā€œThe place where you put imaā€”ā€

ā€œIs it xxxxxxxxx?!ā€

ā€œÄ€e, ka rawe!ā€

Answer: Instagram (pae/platform, āhua/image)

ā€

7. Tukuoro

ā€œTo release soundsā€¦aā€¦ sound releasing machineā€¦?ā€

ā€œThatā€™s exactly right,ā€ I say, but sheā€™s still lost. ā€œTukuoro is the kupu forā€¦ ā€œ

Answer: Speaker (tuku/release, oro/sound)

8. Tiriata

I give her the meaning of ā€˜tiriā€™ and she pieces this one together.

ā€œSo now I've got that ā€˜ataā€™ is ā€˜videoā€™ā€¦, is it xxxxxxx?ā€

ā€œTIKA!ā€ Weā€™re on a roll.

Answer: YouTube (tiri/to distribute, ata/video)

ā€

9. Hopuoro

ā€œCatchā€¦ soundā€¦ā€”Shazam?!ā€

Itā€™s a great guess, but he hē/mistake.

Answer: Microphone (hopu/capture, oro/sound)

ā€

10. Pukamata

She says this one is familiar. She should have stopped thereā€¦

ā€I know ā€˜mataā€™ is ā€˜faceā€™, but whatā€™s ā€˜pukaā€™?ā€

I glare because I know she knows this one.

ā€œOhhhhhh,ā€ kua taka te kapa/she clicks and slaps a palm to the face exactly like the emoji.

Answer: Facebook (puka/book, mata/face)
ā€

ā€

Final grade: A+++. The score is based on participation and that earlier attitude which has me nervous of giving a grade any lower.

Ka pai Lizzie and anyone else who had a guess.

ā€

Catch ya next week e te whānau. Ngā mihi nā€”, JUSTĀ JOKES. Noho ora mai rā!
