Picks o te wiki

Our top 4 Ā musically inspired recommendations from the world of Māori arts, media, and events.

ā€

#1 ā€˜Poi E: The Story of Our Songā€™, a documentaryā€ā€

The song is mÄ«haro/awesome, itā€™s backstory even more so. Featuring Dalvanius Prime, his dreams and chihuahuas, Queen Elizabeth, Pātea ika me ngā rÄ«wai pakapaka/fish n chip shop, Michael Jackson, and many freezing works kaimahi/employees, Iā€™m going to go out on a limb and say this is Aotearoaā€™s most entertaining and inspiring entrepreneurial story, ever (sorry Rocket Lab). You must watch it.

Find it: on TVNZ on demand I Time: 1 hour 30 mins I Cost: free I Credits: written & directed by Tearepa Kahi, feat. Dalvanius Prime, the Pātea Māori Club, and many other locals.

#2 ā€˜How to make an ukutangiā€™, an article and video

The danger of being a Ngāti Nerd is the temptation to bury ourselves in pukapuka/books instead of experiencing things first-hand. Here, we have a generous tono/invitation from Ruby Solly to get our hands dirty and create our own ukutangiā€”a beautiful tāonga puoro/Māori instrument with an extremely beautiful purpose. Take it with both e te whānau.

Find it: on the Kauae Raro website I Time: 5 mins I Cost: free I Credits: written and demonstrated by Ruby Solly, video and sound by Kahu Kutia

#3 ā€˜Hirini Melbourneā€™, a podcast series

I listened to this podcast aloud in the ngahere/bush because I forgot my headphones and, no kaka, tÅ«Ä« started following me and singing along. Turns out Hirini wasnā€™t just famous in the human world. RNZā€™s unrushed storytelling is an immensely pleasurable way to find out why (a massive contribution to our understanding of Māori music and many great waiata are involved).

Find it: on the Radio NZ website I Time: 6 parts, 50 mins each I Cost: free I Credits: the series is presented by Paul Diamond

#4 ā€˜Waiata Anthemsā€™, a tv series

This is not just a ā€˜whoā€™s whoā€™ of the Aotearoa music scene, itā€™s a ā€˜whoā€™s who, how do they relate to Māoridom, what are their deepest cultural dreams and vulnerabilities, what goes into the Māori translation of their waiata, can they pull off a performance, and how will that change their life and perhaps yoursā€™ of the Aotearoa music scene. Well worth a squiz.

Find it: on TVNZ on demand I Time: 15 min episodes I Cost: free I Credits: Notable Pictures is the production company and Dame Hinewehi Mohi is the exec producer.
